In Chigongwe (it was a village, now a suburban center west of Dodoma which is 30 km from its center), the long-term shelter is operational with the aim of welcoming children or adolescents for a longer time before being reunited to their families.
The children and adolescents who come from the street, after passing by the Drop In Center and the Shukurani shelter, a short-term welcome home, and after it is cleared that at that moment the conditions for immediate reintegration into the family do not exist, they will live for a period, at this shelter.
In recent years, the need to host children in a structure that is not located in the city context and in addition with sufficient space to carry out a whole series of recreational and educational activities, etc., has become increasingly accentuated. Another reason that led KISEDET to seek a new reception facility is the need to respond to the growing phenomenon of street children in the city of Dodoma, who often already use drugs (glues, petrol, etc.) .
Hence the choice and the need to open a new shelter in the village of Chigongwe, on the outskirts of the city where the village administration has donated an area of about 25 hectares to KISEDET. In exchange, KISEDET purchased 140 sheets to cover the roof of a secondary school classroom (then under construction), for a value of € 1,200.00.
There are two small houses that can accommodate 24 children and a room equipped with a shower and a closet where the social welfare workers on duty sleep, in the figures of Shangazi Leah (aunt), Teacher Issa and Teacher Isaac.
The children/adolescents hosted attend primary and secondary government schools in the area.
