Chigongwe (it was a village, but now it is a suburban center 25 km west of Dodoma ), which is the long-term shelter, has the aim of welcoming children or adolescents for a longer time before being reunited with their families.
The children and adolescents who come from the street, after dropping by the Drop-In Center and the Shukurani shelter, a short-term welcome home, and after it is clear that at that moment the possibility for an immediate reintegration with the family does not exist, they will live for a while at this shelter.
In recent years, the need to host children in a structure that is not located in the city and with enough space to carry out a whole series of recreational and educational activities, etc., has become increasingly urgent. Another reason that led KISEDET to seek a new reception facility is the need to respond to the growing phenomenon of street children in the city of Dodoma, who often already use drugs (glues, petrol, etc.).
Hence the decision and need to open a new shelter in the village of Chigongwe, on the outskirts of the city where the village administration has donated an area of about 25 hectares to KISEDET. In exchange, KISEDET purchased 140 aluminum sheets to cover the roof of a secondary school classroom (which was under construction then), at a value of € 1,200.00.
There are two small houses that can accommodate 24 children and a room equipped with a shower and a closet where the social welfare workers on duty sleep, who are Shangazi Leah (aunt), Teacher Calvin and Teacher Deo.
The children/adolescents hosted attend the primary and secondary government schools in the area.
In the compound there are: a small office, the new ‘Elena Fontana’ guesthouse and a small workshop. There are also two tanks for the fish and a new large chicken coop.
The new female dormitory is under construction.
