Various life and family challenges lead children and youth to flee and start living on the streets. While on the streets they start working to earn money for their basic needs, especially food and clothing, while they continue to sleep on the streets. After finding out, KISEDET began working with children/youth living and working on the streets by supporting basic needs and taking them to sober house.
Sober house is a place for youth/children affected by drugs (glue, marijuana, alcohol, etc.) to whom KISEDET provides a variety of trainings, including counselling and psychotherapy, life skills and various activities that aim to help them forget and stop using glue. It is a difficult task to change the youth’s mindset but KISEDET, in collaboration with sober houses of Arusha and Dar es Salaam, tries to help and rescue youth from using drug. They managed to help so many youths who have gone through it and now have stopped using glue and are engaging in various social activities.
A good example is young J. T. who’s for long time stayed on the streets and had been addicted to glue. KISEDET spoke to him and he expressed a desire to change. The organization then took him to one of the sober houses in Arusha and so far, he has stopped using glue and is doing well. Before taking him to sober, the Organization’s Welfare Officer, sits with a child/youth and has him sign up for his “life plan”, which means that, when he leaves Sober house, he will be willing to study (vocational colleges or partnership study for a certain profession, Life skills)
KISEDET’s intention is to keep helping these children/youth to get rid of glue and other drugs because only challenges caused them to stumble into that conditions. Our plan is to take more youth/children to Sober Houses, as much as we can.
You can partner with KISEDET by contributing rehab costs so that we can help more children/youth. The cost of one child/youth to sober house is Tshs. 300,000 (Euro 130) for the first month, and Tshs. 250,000 (100) for the next months.
